ABSTRACT

This project was undertaken to examine the origin and development of Co-operative societies in Nigeria. Many rural areas have benefited in one way or the other with various projects executed by cooperative organizations in communities since the introduction of co-operative societies in Nigeria. In Nigeria cooperatives provide locally needed services, employment and contribute a sense of community and social cohesion. People come together in cooperative societies to pool their resources together so as to meet individual needs that could not be resolved by individual limited financial capacity. Issues of cooperative corruption must be addressed by strengthening state oversight, internal audit systems and instituting transparent leadership. Governments and states must however not politically and sentimentally meddle in the affairs of cooperatives so they can retain their original and socially compatible elements that are their cutting edges and trademarks. The social capital and inherent elements functionality must be allowed to subsist against all odds. This is only when Cooperative Efficiency can be instituted as cooperatives remain very promising components of Nigerian development potentialities.
